The Camellia is found in eastern and southern Asia They are highly valued for their very early flowering, often among the first flowers to appear in the late winter.
The Camellia japonica is one of the best known species and is sometimes called the Rose of winter. The 'California' variety has a large, semi-double rose-red flower. It blossoms from February to April.
These specimen camellias have been grown outside so they are fully hardy, but they contain a lot of buds.
