The Camellia is found in eastern and southern Asia They are highly valued for their very early flowering, often among the first flowers to appear in the late winter.
The Camellia sansanqua, commonly known as the Christmas Camellia is a species native to the evergreen coastal forests of southern Japan. 'Yuletide' is a variety grown especially to flower beautiful deep red flowers over the Christmas period. It is a medium sized shrub with evergreen, glossy, dark-green leaves.
These specimen camellias have been grown outside so they are fully hardy, but they contain a lot of buds.
Plant sizes are approximate. There will be natural variation.
These easy maintenance, hardy plants thrive in full to partial shade and grow best in clay, loam and sandy soils with a neutral or acid pH. Camellia sasanqua Yuletide is happy in a border or in a container and also makes wonderful, compact ornamental hedge for a north, west or east facing hedge. Fully frost hardy, prune lightly immediately after flowering to retain shape or reduce size.
