Lavender is a well known small shrub that comes from Mediterranean areas. The leaves are generally grey green in colour. They are cultivated for their long stalked spikes of very fragrant flowers which come in a range of colours, the most well known being blue to violet. They are plants that love sunny conditions. The flowers can be dried and used in pot pourri and the aroma is said to be relaxing, the essential oils are extracted and added to various products such as soap.
It is a great favourite in cottage gardens. It makes a lovely edging plant. Standard plants look attractive in pots. Stoechas has unusual flowers which are very small topped by the familiar bracts which give the plant one of the names it is known by, butterfly lavender.
