An evergreen woody perennial herb of Mediterranean origin, Rosmarinus officinalis, commonly known as rosemary, has fragrant and aromatic needle-like leaves. Used as a culinary herb and a decorative plant. Tubular white to mauve flowers from mid spring to early summer, sometimes recurring in autumn.
The plant is said to improve the memory, and the leaves are used to flavour various foods such as stuffings and roast meats.
In the Middle Ages, rosemary was associated with wedding ceremonies. The bride would wear a rosemary headpiece, and the groom and wedding guests would wear a sprig. From this association rosemary evolved into a love charm. It was believed that placing a sprig of rosemary under a pillow before sleep would repel nightmares, and rosemary placed outside the home would repel witches.
Use rosemary with meat, especially lamb, and other savoury dishes. Rosemary can also be used with sweeter food such as apples, summer wine cups and as flavouring in cakes. For medicinal purpose, rosemary can be used in shampoos as an effective hair tonic.
