Wisteria are most attractive deciduous climbing plants, well loved for their characteristic pendant and often fragrant flowers which occur in spring or summer. They are members of the pea, luguminosae family of plants and the flowers and seed pods are most reminiscent of this fact. They are fully hardy. If eaten all parts will cause much discomfort. They are generally trouble free although a few things including honey fungus or aphids may cause problems. The brachybotrys varieties of wisteria all have lovely silky leaves. 'Showa Beni' has various shades of pink flowers with a conspicuous yellow eye. The racemes are not as long as some wisteria but the individual flowers are larger than usual. The fresh young leaves look attractive with their downy covering.
